Do Your Holiday Announcements Help Out Your SEO?

We’re well into the Christmas Season and we’re all starting to see announcements for sales and events online in our email and social media feeds. What I’m noticing are that people are posting only in Facebook but they aren’t using those posts to help drive traffic back to their own websites.  It’s a simple matter of deciding where your content and/or posts originate from.

I’m a big believer in starting at your business website. I use WordPress for the majority of my websites and I adore the Jetpack plugin as a suite of ready-to-go tools for a variety of purposes. I used to install a dozen or so plugins whenever I would make a new WordPress site, but I’ve been able to cut that way down after I started using Jetpack.

I use the “Publicize” module in Jetpack to connect Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Tumblr to my blog. When I hit “Publish” on this particular blog, this post is going to automatically update my feeds in those networks with a link back to my blog. That way I’m getting as many eyeballs as possible on my posts along with links back to my site from my chose social networks.

Any blogging platform worth mentioning has the same functionality, it’s just a matter of figuring it out and setting it up to get the most bang for your buck.

Facebook’s Growth in 2011

Here’s an interesting infographic from on the growth of Facebook profiles and pages in 2011.  Facebook added more than 200 million users last year, growing 37%.  The age groups that made the biggest percentage gains are 16-17 year olds and those over 65, both experiencing 52% growth.    The graphic also tracks the Top 10 Countries, Top 10 Brand Pages, Top 10 Public Figures, and Top 10 Places for Check Ins.

My Email Address Came In Today!

Facebook’s new email address rollout finally arrived on my doorstop today.  When I logged into Facebook today, I was asked if I wanted to activate the email address:  Of course I said yes, and now I have the coolest email address I’ve owned since I had an address!

Is this going to change my life significantly?  Am I going to give up my handy-dandy address for Facebook?  Not today.  For now, the address is just a way to get messages from outside Facebook into your Facebook message box.  I don’t see any added functionality in the “Messages” section, so for now it’ll remain the place where my random event invitations go to die.

If Facebook steps up to meet the functionality of Gmail, I may consider it, but not today.

Using Facebook for Your Business While Keeping Your Privacy

So I’ve been struggling with exactly how to use Facebook as a business tool instead of as a way to look at pictures of my friends’ kids or find people I knew in high school. One of the problems inherent in Facebook is that all your worlds start to merge. Personal and business, past and present, close friends and just acquaintances. Do you really want your business associates to see pictures of you at the beach? Do you really want your family and friends to get your business pitches?

As an internet marketer I’ve bit the bullet and accepted that my networking contacts are going to be able to find me and see pictures of me swing dancing or out with my friends. That’s fine, we live in an age where we can find out exactly what our neighbors paid for their house and if they’ve ever been arrested or not. However, you can still use Facebook to promote your business and keep some semblance of anonymity. Promote your business with a Facebook Fan Page.

You get most of the functionality of a normal Facebook page, but geared for business. If you’re familiar with Facebook, you’ll adapt to fan pages quickly. The main difference is that you get fans instead of friends and you put in business information instead of personal info. You get:

  • Status Updates
  • Wall Posts
  • Links
  • Pictures and video
  • Notes
  • Events

In addition you can:

  • Get customer reviews
  • Promote other pages
  • Run ads on Facebook to promote your page
  • Assign multiple people to manage your page

Even better, you can automatically update your page from your blog (as you’ll see when I publish this). Lastly, the analytics that Facebook offers to Fan Page managers is outstanding. You get reports on fans and what kind of interactions they’re performing with your page and whether your postings are effective or not. There’s some really powerful stuff on here and I’m just delving into it myself.
